Temp vs. Temp-to-Hire vs. Direct Hire: Which Model Fits?
The three staffing models differ in who employs the worker and for how long. Here's how to choose the right one for your need.
Temporary staffing places workers on the agency's payroll for a defined need. Temp-to-hire is a working trial — the worker stays on the agency's payroll for an evaluation period, then converts to your payroll if it's a fit. Direct hire is permanent from day one, with the agency recruiting and you employing the person immediately. Choose temp for flexible or short-term needs, temp-to-hire to reduce hiring risk, and direct hire for permanent roles you want filled fast.
Temporary staffing
The worker is employed by the agency for the length of the assignment. You direct the work; the agency handles pay, taxes, and workers' comp. When the need ends, the assignment ends — no severance, no unemployment exposure for you.
Best for: seasonal surges, project work, covering a leave, or scaling a shift up and down with demand.
Temp-to-hire
A working interview. The worker is on the agency's payroll through an evaluation period — typically a few hundred hours — so you can assess reliability, skill, and culture fit on the actual floor before you commit. If it works, you convert them to your payroll; if it doesn't, you simply end the assignment.
Best for: roles where fit and dependability matter and you'd rather see the work than gamble on a resume.
Direct hire
The agency recruits and screens to your spec, and the person joins your payroll from day one as a permanent employee. You pay the agency a placement fee on a successful hire.
Best for: permanent roles, leadership, and specialized positions. For professional and executive direct-hire searches, Lingo runs those through our Lingo Professional division.
A quick way to decide
Ask two questions: Is the need permanent? And how much do you want to de-risk the hire? Permanent + low risk tolerance points to temp-to-hire or direct hire. Variable or short-term need points to temporary. When in doubt, temp-to-hire gives you the most optionality.
Frequently asked
What is the typical temp-to-hire evaluation period?
It varies by employer and role, but a few hundred worked hours is common. Your branch will set clear terms up front, including any conversion fee.
Is direct hire more expensive than temp?
They're priced differently. Temp and temp-to-hire bill an hourly rate that includes wages and employer costs; direct hire is a one-time placement fee. Which is cheaper depends on how long you'd keep the worker.
Can a temporary assignment become permanent?
Yes. Many temporary and temp-to-hire assignments convert to permanent positions — it's one of the most common ways workers land full-time jobs.
